New Nature publication about the origin of mitochondria

‘Deep mitochondrial origin outside the sampled alphaproteobacteria’ is the brand-new publication in Nature by the Ettema-Lab in collaboration with international partners.

This study sought to find the closest living relatives of the mitochondrial ancestor and increased the genomic sample of alphaproteobacteria with 13 previously uncharacterized lineages from the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean. After careful phylogenetic analyses, our team found that none of the new lineages were directly related to mitochondria, but neither were any of the established alphaproteobacterial lineages. Instead, the analyses put forward a new hypothesis that the ancestral lineage of mitochondria diverged from the Alphaproteobacteria prior to the latters diversification.
